Distributed Antenna Systems

Today, digital communication is not just a privilege for some. It is a necessity for all, and some would even argue that access to communication devices and tools such as mobile phones or internet connectivity should be considered a basic human right. We manage both our professional and personal lives through our devices, handling everything from meet-ups to emergencies with just a few taps on a screen.

This is why property owners endeavour to develop a reliable in-building distributed antenna system, better known in the industry as DAS. What is DAS? How does it work? Why is it important? Read on to find out.

What Is a Distributed Antenna System?

DAS is used to supply mobile telephone signal within large properties such as office buildings, shopping centres, hospitals, stadiums, train stations, and more. Properties like these are often made of concrete and metal. When cellular signal from the outside tries to enter these buildings, they either become weakened or may even totally blocked.

To improve the signal quality, the solution is to install a DAS system inside the building. DAS distributes mobile telephone signal throughout the premises via a network of small antennas.

How It Works

The signal source (Carrier base transceiver stations), placed typically within the MDF room, feeds mobile telephone signal into the in-building DAS system.

The four types of distribution systems are active, passive, hybrid, and digital. The two most common ones are passive and active DAS.

The Importance of a Distributed Antenna System

The importance of a DAS is quite straightforward: building occupants are interested in having reliable mobile telephone signal while they are inside. A person has a poor experience inside a space when they fail to efficiently communicate with customers, friends, family members, or colleagues.

In properties that do not have a DAS, people find themselves having to go through the experience of searching through the building to find a location were they are able to make a call or send a message. Or worst case, even leaving the building altogether. This experience can range from inconvenient to downright dangerous, as in the case of emergencies.

In corporate buildings, staff may receive or makes hundreds of calls daily. In hospitals, people need their phones at all times in case of emergencies or other urgent errands. In stadiums and retail centres, calling friends or posting on social media is all part of the experience one has in these spaces.

Making calls, sending messages, and using the internet are all important parts of people’s daily lives, and that is why a reliable distributed antenna system is absolutely necessary.
